Attention Span is Dwindling

I have a sister in law named Amanda that I totally and completely love. Just remember that because I am going to talk about her. I remember a conversation with her a few years ago about housekeeping. Okay, I won't put it so nicely, cleaning your dang house. Our conversation went something like this:
Amanda: I met someone who cleans house like I do.
Rachel: Oh yeah, who?
Amanda: My friend Dyan.
Rachel: (You are all gonna hate me for this comment. It still hurts me today to think that I said it.) So Dyan is messy too?
Amanda: Oh, no. (stunned that I had said such a thing) Not messy, just nothing gets done very quickly because when she starts cleaning one thing, she realizes something else near there needs to be cleaned or picked up, and so starts that project before she finishes the first one.
Rachel: (feeling VERY horrible about saying what I did) Oh yeah, I do that sometimes too. (Really thinking, I have NEVER done that!)

So two days ago I was talking to my friend Jen. Same type of conversation, except for the jab about being messy. (I love you too Jen!) Jen was so funny. She said she climbed up to change the channel on her radio, which is apparently on top of her kitchen cupboards, and realized how dusty it was up there. So she started to dust and noticed from this angle how dirty the floor was. So she got down and started to clean up the floor when she remembered she needed to get the clothes out of the dryer. So she went to the dryer and saw that the garbage needed to be taken out, and so she did that. On her way back to the dryer, she saw her husband forgot to put a fresh roll of toilet paper on the holder, so she stopped in the bathroom, put the lid down, and changed the toilet paper roll. She then saw the need of a little mop job since she has 3 young boys and proceeded to mop the bathroom floor. Just then she heard World War 3 coming from the living room and figured there must be bloodshed so she ran downstairs, picked up a few Star Wars action figures on the way, and broke up the argument. She decided the boys needed a snack, went to the kitchen and saw her dusting cloth up on top of her cabinets, climbed up and started the cycle all over again.

Okay, so I couldn't remember her version, so I made it up, but you get the point. Yesterday my amazing real estate agent called and told me that 2 agents wanted to see my house today. So I spent most of the afternoon yesterday spiffing up. When the girls went to bed, I brought out the hard core cleaning products and got busy. I don't want to admit it because I have always thought that I am such a together person, but I did the Amanda/Dyan/Jen routine. I would be cleaning something really well last night and see something else that needed my attention and completely forget the other thing that I was going to do and why I was standing in the kitchen with a roll of paper towels under one arm, a handful of Kelsey's artwork in the other hand, and a Polly Pocket I found in MY bathroom in my mouth. What project was I headed to? By the way, if anyone can explain why the toy vacuum and the Polly Pockets always end up in MY bathroom, let me know.

This picture shows that Kendal has more of an attention span than I have had lately. Kendal watched an ENTIRE episode of Dora today. That is simply amazing for her. What is wrong with all of us frazzled-brained housekeeping mothers?

By the way Amanda, I am so sorry about that conversation with you. I must have totally hurt your sweet little feelings. I love you girl and I am a member of your club now.

We are doing it the wrong way, we all need to be on speed so we can be scatter brained and still get everything done. (I did do a lot better when I was on Mary and Chappel Salsa)
By the way I can't believe you would be rude. I am sure Amanda knows that you were not being rude.
PS Tonight I told Brian look how nice the computer room looks, didn't I do such a good job cleaning it up... Without even a thought he said, yeah your mom did a great job... Dang he knows me too well. I started to clean it but then...

I'm so glad to know I'm not the only one with this cleaning problem! My folded laundry is still on the couch. At least it got folded...maybe tomorrow it will get put away...

I am that way, and I don't have small children in the house all the time. I think that we feel so overwhelmed to get everything really clean and be super effective that we turn into not-so-super-effective cleaners. I have an answer, this is what I do. I get my wonderful husband involved in the cleaning because he can stay on task in one room til its done and I flit around the house doing all the odd-ball stuff that you just "see" as you are doing other stuff. For some reason that works for me--maybe cause at least the room he is cleaning actually gets good and clean!

I hear ya. I get like like that when I am overwhelmed with to many chores and I have to remind myself to stay organized. But then I always tell myself I will forget it if I skip over it...so I must do it now and then you are left with 5 projects all unfinished. I was checking out how hard it would be to take down that sign. All I need is a pair of plyers (sp?). I could have it down in less that 2 minutes. COME ON ALREADY...STAY!

Amanda-if you take down the sign at least return to the sexy agent who's name is on it! That shit is expensive!!

I'm so glad to learn that I am not the only one that has this problem. Rob makes fun of me all the time for not being able to complete just one room at a time. Even just sitting here I remembered that I still have clothes in the dryer and I'm sure when I take them to my room I will find something else to take care of.

Thank you all Rachel Friends for making me feel good... I know you can't possibly be as bad as I am but I feel like I am not alone... Not everyone is like Rachel. Love you Rachel I am working it!

THATS THE SECRET!!! Maybe if I cleaned sporatically like that my house would get done. My big cleaning days are Saturday and yes, I don't want to say it, Sunday. I always get the kitchen and back bathroom cleaned really well, thats where I start. Then by the time I pick up a few things to start in the living room, It's time to feed kids or do homework. So I never get back to the rest of the house. I hate starting a room and not finishing it before I move on. I know I am sick and need help!!!
